FAQ

Why Winterise Your Vessel?

Protect your investment before the cold sets in.

Winterising is a thorough end-of-season check that drains all water from the engine and systems, stabilises fuel, protects the battery, and prevents corrosion — effectively a service without oils and filters.

A fishing line caught behind a propeller can damage the output shaft seal, allowing water into the gearbox. Water sitting in the gearbox over winter causes rust on bearings, gears, and shafts — leading to full destruction.

Repair cost if missed: $4,000 – $6,000 — and likely not ready for summer.

Found at winterising: Drain, replace gear oil, new seal — around $30.

Essential winterisation steps

Each area below is checked and serviced during your winterisation:

Engine protection

Drain all water from the engine block, manifolds, and hoses. Flush raw-water cooling with marine anti-corrosion fluid. Spray fogging oil into cylinders to prevent rust.

Fuel & oil

Add a high-quality fuel stabiliser to prevent ethanol issues. Check or change engine oil and lower-unit gear lube, inspecting for water intrusion — a sign of worn seals.

Electrical

Clean, fully charge, and disconnect batteries — or remove for storage. Remove electronics. Use a ScanTool to check for engine fault codes. Inspect for electrical and water damage.

Interior & hull

Clean thoroughly to prevent mildew. Use moisture absorbers. Apply corrosion guard to the engine. Check and replace anodes. Store outboard/stern drive leg in the down position to allow full drainage.

Pest protection

Inspect the cabin and hull for rodents, ants, and bugs. Apply rodent deterrents as needed to avoid costly interior damage over winter.

Pre-summer service

At the end of winter, a minor pre-summer check resolves issues early — ensuring your vessel is launch-ready on time for the season.
